Colouring Catchup.....

This week I started a new book and went full steam ahead towards getting another one completely coloured.

First up, the beautiful Kwiaty Baroku arrived recently and I decided to make a start on it.
This is a book of images adapted from the baroque engravings of Jacob Kempener.
Of course I envisaged the background being much darker than this! I started out with indigo pencils and then went over it with the darkest blue pastel I have. I may yet fiddle with it some more. We'll see!

Kwiaty Baroku

The rest of the week was spent colouring from my main book, Fantastisches Malbuch (review). I'm now close to the end of the book and it'll be finished in the next two weeks.
First up is this image from one of the jigsaws. The interesting bit was the glass cupboard in the middle of the image

Fantastisches Malbuch

Next up are these two images from his picture book, Falling Angels. The second image s only partly from the book.

The next image is fantastic to colour and this gave my brown Inktense a workout -

Fantastisches Malbuch

This one that comes next in the book, I coloured last year for the review and is from the cover of Tower to the Sun -

Fantastisches Malbuch

This one is another from The Last Alchemist -

Fantastisches Malbuch

And finally the red box from How to Live Forever. This one was really tricky because the image was very faint in places.

Fantastisches Malbuch

See you next week, probably.

Some background - I've never had an art lesson in my life and I consider myself an average colourer who just puddles along, trying to complete books, enjoy and challenge myself. These colouring posts are really a record for me, primarily, of what I coloured and some background to the colouring. I doubt that anyone will learn anything from them so don't expect a tutorial! Just me, rambling about my hobby!

Twelve Dancing Princesses from Ruth Sanderson

Ruth Sanderson knows fairytales inside out. She has been illustrating and adapting fairytales into stunning picture books for many years. Now she has started a new series of greyscale colouring books, based on her picture books. The series is called Beautiful Fairy Tales and the first books are available - The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Goldilocks and Cinderella.

Tell me more …

Ruth has adapted the artwork from her picture book of the same title into greyscale images for colouring. Considerable thought has gone into this process as the quality of the greyscale is very good. There are 24 images that take you through the story, and following on are 12 bonus images where Ruth has darkened some of the outlines and added a bit more detail in places. These pages are for you to try out colours, different media and your greyscale technique. Great idea as many of us are new to this style of colouring.

The book does not include the text of the fairytales. All images are single-sided, with borders so there are no spine issues.
The paper is the standard average quality that you get with Createspace publications. You may wish to colour on better quality paper so Ruth has made these images available for purchase in pdf format from her website - here.

At the front of the book is a really useful introduction by Ruth with suggestions on how to colour greyscale and colour choices. I'll be taking that on board.
This is one book that I plan on colouring right through once I finish a few that I have on the go.
I find Ruth's artwork so beautiful. The figures and faces are so appropriate for these classic fairytales. Check them out in the flip through video up above.

* Special thanks to Wendy Russell for sharing her colouring.

*This book was purchased by me.
