Colouring Catchup...

Some background - I've never had an art lesson in my life and I consider myself an average colourer who just puddles along, trying to complete books, enjoy and challenge myself. These colouring posts are really a record for me, primarily, of what I coloured and some background to the colouring. I doubt that anyone will learn anything from them so don't expect a tutorial! Just me, rambling about my hobby!

This week several colourings were finished so it looks like quite a busy week but it was fairly normal, time-wise. My Derwent pastel pencils arrived, which I'd bought second hand. Next week I'll show you my first efforts with them.

First up, last week I'd finished this spread from Daria Song's The Night Voyage but I wasn't too thrilled with the pastel background. As often happens, I visualise things ending up a bit different to how they actually do! I think I got a bit confused with the clouds. I certainly wanted the sky to be much darker, so I dabbled around a bit with pastels. However, the colouring won in the end and I decided to stop digging a hole for myself!

The Night Voyage

What was disappointing about this image was how much was lost in the spine. Believe it or not, there's a complete, small, linking carriage between the two larger carriages, but very little of it was even visible in my edition. Here's the same image as a postcard later in the book and you can see how much was lost in the spine. By the way, the colouring group I pop along too suggested taking a rolling pin to the spine to try to flatten it out a bit. I've yet to try that!

Next colouring finished was my black plate from Secret Garden. As many of you know, I'm colouring my way through Secret Garden, in mostly monochrome. The hidden objects might have colour. I decided to turn these two mandalas into plates. So this week I finished the second of them, which was a lot more work, inking the leaves and flowers. I had to be careful to keep the brakes on though or it would have looked too black. I was tempted to put a pale grey pastel background behind it but decided not to.

Here is the black plate -

And here is the pair of plates, side-by-side in the book -

The white and black plates from Secret Garden

After this little change of pace, I headed back into my main book for another three spreads, Colin Thompson's Fantastisches Malbuch.
First up was the Red Castle ruins from Mars. I wasn't particularly looking forward to colouring this but I ended up really enjoying it. The greyscale in this image was really dark in places, so what I had hoped would be a pale lemon graduating to pale teal sky ending up having to be much more blue. The teal pastel just looked more greyish when I put it on. This is coloured mostly in Derwent Inktense.

Then I coloured the next image in this book. I haven't been able to find out what the background to this drawing is but it was great to do. The right hand page is a bit like a deconstruction of the left hand page. There are 2 Cafe Maxs, 2 dogs, some ladies, a fairy, a couple of cats, lots of books and several people behind bars! So much to chuckle over in these images. This is done in Inktense and Graphitint with pastel for the sky.

Fantastisches Mabuch

So that was this week. Hope you liked that little roundup. I'm away for part of next week and I think I'll take Secret Garden with me to make a start on the owl. I've also started the sunflowers spread in Fantastisches Malbuch and next time I'll share my little pastel pencil colouring.
