Intricate Ink by Tim Jeffs

A little bit about me….

I am married with two kids, four grandchildren and two dogs.

What made you start colouring?

I was at a craft show in Melbourne looking for something new to do. A friend had just started colouring and I was interested. I bought Secret Garden by Johanna Basford and a packet of pencils, thinking that would be it. 18 months later and I have more books and pencils than I know what to do with!

Do you consider colouring to be an art?

I believe it is….it's not just pick up a pencil and colour in a picture. You need to look at shading, blending, balance, light, texture and colours which is not easy. I am always trying to learn and improve. I have seen the most stunning work and am trying to emulate the wonderful colourists I see out there.

What materials do you like to use?

I am a pencil girl…..I will admit I don't like using markers and gel pens as I am no good with them. I prefer pencils because I have much more control over shading and blending (and I can erase too)! I do use pastels such as Pans for backgrounds. I am about to experiment with watercolours and Inktense…which could be interesting.

Which is your favourite colouring book?

That's a very hard question. I have a lot of books and I really do like them all, but I would have to say that Maria Trolle and Hanna Karlzon would be my go to books. I love their illustrations and the paper is excellent. The other artist I really like is Tim Jeffs. His animals are absolutely stunning.

Do you frame your finished colourings? Or display them?

No…they all stay in their books.

What is your favourite colour?

I don't really have a single colour but I love the ochre, moss green and brown shades. I do a lot of animals and flower pages so these colours get used a lot.

What advice would you have for other colourists?

Try not to compare yourself to others, although this is difficult. We are always hardest on ourselves. Look at joining a Facebook group. Like-minded people are always a good source of advice and inspiration. Try a tutorial, ask questions and don't be afraid to try a new technique. Always remember that there is no such thing as the colouring police so enjoy what you're doing. Basically, if it has made you happy, that's all that matters.

Thanks Sally. Very good advice and inspiration.

Here are some of the books that Sally is colouring from…..
