2016: Millie Marotta's Impressive Year

With sales of colouring books for adults soaring and holding up, the three leaders in colouring book art are busier than ever this year.

To date I have looked at Johanna Basford's 2016 - here
And Kerby Rosane's 2016 - here.

Now let's look at what Millie Marotta is releasing this year.

First up, the colouring books.

Colouring Books

Millie has been a bit of a trend setter in the past. She was amongst the first to head into the tropical and jungle themes. Wild Savannah was published earlier this year and Millie's drawing seems to get better with each book.
Curious Creatures is already calling my name as I hope to learn about all manner of new creatures and I hope there are plenty of insects in this book.

Artist's Editions

I applaud you if you've had the patience to wait for the Artist's editions to come out.
These books are hardback with heavier paper than the normal book. Some of the double spread images may not be included in these editions. There are usually extra loose prints in an envelope at the book.

From Movies to a Colouring Book

I was surprised to see in the Nielsen article recently that Harry Potter and Dr Who colouring books were ranked amongst the best sellers. Up until April this year, the Harry Potter Colouring book ranked (in colouring book sales) ahead of Lost Ocean, with Dr Who in ninth spot.

I reviewed Harry Potter Poster book - here.
And Tolkien's Worldhere.

Here is the latest one, based on Tolkien's trilogy via the movies.

Arwen - "If you want him, come and claim him" (unfinished)!

Comment:

The combination of New Line images adapted from their movies and drawings from illustrator, Nicolette Caven, works well and makes for a cohesive book. All the images are so easy to recall from the movies that it's a pleasure to give them colour. It's another way to relive that powerful movie experience. Maybe play the soundtrack as you colour!

Drawing:

The drawings by Nicolette are mostly the landscapes but there are also several good portraits. The line width is fine to medium and she has given lots of fine lines to indicate shading. They are, of course, taken from the movie so the characters and locations are familiar. The other pages along with text, introducing the main characters, are by the film company, New Line Productions. They are well chosen and most have attractive borders. The line width in these is medium. As far as I can recall the images are in plot order. On the whole there is a cohesion to the book and some powerful images to colour. Get out your dark colours!

Layout and Paper:

The book is a manageable size and the cover, with highlights of silver foil, gives you an idea of the quality of the drawing.
There is a good introduction, galloping through the different story locations and telling you briefly about the films, with mention of the New Zealand landscapes.
Yes, the book has double-sided images; several running into a tightly glued spine. You can see in the video how Jane was struggling to get the book flat. However, in time it will probably loosen up and flatten down. The paper is white and average to good quality. Because of the double-sided issue, you will need to test any pens you wish to use.

Award-winning and Monochrome.

This is not a colouring book!

Well, that's got your attention!

This stunning picture book has just won for its illustrator, Chris Riddell, an unprecedented third Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration. Chris is the current Children's Laureate in Britain.
So why have I brought this book to your attention?
The illustrations are mostly in monochrome with touches of gold. It is interesting to see the powerful images that can be created in just black and white. I've coloured many images in monochrome and there's plenty to learn from Chris here.

But since becoming a colourer I also find I look around with different eyes. There seem to be opportunities everywhere to add colour to objects, not just books.
When I first saw this book I couldn't resist the chance to visualise some of these beautiful drawings with some colour added, while enjoying them as they are.
Remember, this is not a colouring book so if you want to add colour, you will need to test the paper, which has a sheen to it. In the Alice group I am part of, one member is colouring her way through a fiction copy of Alice with Tenniel illustrations. I hope one day to colour some of Sheperd's Pooh Bear drawings in an AA Milne book.

Take a look at these two videos from the publisher, Bloomsbury Books, that give you a feeling for the story and the illustrations. I don't think copyright will permit me to show you photos of images or do a flip through video. But these videos will give you an idea of the potential I see in this book.

Firstly, here's the author, Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell -

And now Chris shows you some drawings and how some of the characters came to be represented -

As for the story, it's a dark, magical, retelling of a tale that combines elements of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

I've bought a copy of this book to add to my picture book collection. Maybe, like Enchanted Forest, I'll leave it as it is and admire the black and white drawings. Or perhaps…………
