"Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again" - C.S. Lewis

This book has been published with little fanfare. I came across it by quite by chance and I'm pleased I did. It's a lesson to other publishers on how to adapt a work of illustrated fiction to a colouring book.

At a glance…..

Comment: This treasure is based on the seven books of the Narnia series by C.S.Lewis.
The original illustrations by Pauline Baynes are the basis of this colouring book, interspersed with well chosen, powerful and moving quotes from the books.
Check the layout section below to see how the book is structured.
Simply put, it's good!

Drawing:  The cover is beautiful, with copper foil highlights in the lettering. The original illustrations have been used throughout this book, slightly adapted for colouring. So you will find quite a lot of shading lines to help you out. The line length is medium throughout.
There are wallpapers, maps, bordered title pages and individual images accompanied by poignant text quotes from the books.
The texts chosen convey the power and drama of the narrative and give me a few goosebump moments.
And how often do you get to colour satyrs, fauns and dwarves? Wonderful.

Paper and Layout:  The layout is one of the strengths of this book. It follows the sequence of the Narnia books, giving the whole book cohesion - The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Horse and his Boy, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair and The Last Battle.
Each section contains -

- a bordered title page

Title page

- followed by a double page spread with a quote, lettered boldly. These will look fantastic coloured.

Quote

- some images with accompanying text.

- a couple of wallpapers.

Wallpaper example

- often a map too.

As you have seen, some of the double page spreads run into the spine but this isn't a major problem. The book is glue and string bound so it will loosen slightly, allowing even better access into the spine. The paper is white and smooth and will take water based pens with care. Always test on an unobtrusive page first.

* This book was sent to me by the publisher for an honest appraisal. Thanks.
